Frequently Asked Questions.

Everything you need to know about private scuba instruction, student equipment, training locations, and getting started with Robert Box Diving.

Getting Started

Do I need any diving experience to start?

No prior scuba experience is required for the PADI Open Water Diver course. We will review course prerequisites, comfort in the water, and any applicable medical requirements before training begins.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. Entry-level scuba training includes required swimming and water-comfort skills. Contact me if you have questions about the current PADI requirements.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum ages depend on the course. For entry-level PADI Open Water training, the minimum age is generally 10, with additional limits and requirements for younger divers. We will confirm eligibility before scheduling.

How long does scuba certification take?

The schedule depends on the course, your preparation, required skills, and the availability of suitable pools and open-water sites. We will agree on a training plan before enrollment.

Equipment & Rentals

Do I need to own scuba equipment to take a course?

No. You may use properly fitted, suitable rental equipment or gear you personally own. Students also arrange and pay for tank (cylinder) rentals and air fills for pool and open-water training. I do not supply or coordinate gear rentals.

Who arranges rental equipment?

Students coordinate their own required equipment, scuba tanks, and air fills directly with a dive shop or provider of their choice. I can explain what you need but do not make rental reservations or purchases on students’ behalf.

Do I need to rent tanks and pay for air fills?

Yes. You are responsible for arranging and paying for scuba tank (cylinder) rentals and air fills for both pool/confined-water training and open-water dives. Contact your chosen dive shop before class to confirm tank and fill availability.

What scuba gear will I need?

Requirements vary by course and dive conditions. Before training, I will explain the required equipment so you can obtain it in advance. Gear must fit properly, function correctly, and be suitable for the planned dives.

Are equipment rental or purchase costs included in tuition?

No. Required scuba equipment, including tank rentals and air fills, must be arranged and paid for by the student. Open Water course tuition does include PADI eLearning, standard certification processing, and scheduled pool access.

Can you recommend what equipment to rent or buy?

Absolutely. I can answer equipment questions and explain course requirements, but choosing a shop, arranging rentals, purchasing equipment, and bringing it to training remain your responsibility.

Training & Dive Locations

Where do scuba lessons take place?

Training takes place at an appropriate pool and open-water dive site in the Fort Worth, Burleson, or surrounding North Texas area. Scheduled pool access for Open Water confined-water instruction is included; the location is confirmed when training is arranged.

What is the difference between confined-water and open-water training?

Confined-water sessions develop foundational skills in a controlled setting, such as a pool or suitable confined-water environment. Open-water dives apply those skills at an appropriate dive site under course standards.

What happens if weather or conditions are unsuitable?

Safety comes first. Training may be postponed or rescheduled if weather, visibility, water conditions, or site access are unsuitable.

Can I schedule private training for myself or a small group?

Yes. I offer private lessons for individuals, couples, and privately arranged groups of three or four friends or family members. Four students is the maximum class size. I do not combine unrelated students into public group classes. The appropriate instructional ratio may be lower based on course standards and conditions.

Is pool access included in Open Water instruction?

Yes. Pool access for scheduled confined-water training is included in the Open Water instruction fee. The training location will be confirmed when we schedule your course. Students still arrange their equipment, tanks, and air fills.

Pricing & Booking

Do I buy my own PADI eLearning?

No. I purchase and assign your required PADI eLearning directly to you at enrollment. For Open Water Diver, PADI eLearning and required course materials are already included in your advertised course price. Please do not purchase eLearning separately before we coordinate your enrollment.

What does a small private group mean?

A private small group is three or four people who register together, such as friends or family. There are never more than four students in a class, and I do not offer public group classes.

How much do scuba courses cost?

Private PADI Open Water course prices are $695 for one student, $595 each for two, $545 each for three, or $525 each for four. These prices include required PADI eLearning/course materials, standard certification processing, instruction, and scheduled pool access. You separately arrange and pay for equipment, scuba tank rentals, air fills, and open-water dive-site admission. See complete pricing and what is included ↗.

Are there other costs besides course tuition?

Open Water course tuition already includes PADI eLearning, required course materials, standard certification processing, instruction, and scheduled pool access. Students separately arrange and pay for equipment (rental or personally owned), tank rentals and air fills for pool and open-water sessions, and open-water dive-site admission. I will explain these responsibilities before enrollment.

How much are privately guided recreational dives?

Divemaster-led local shore dives include two guided recreational dives for $125 for one certified diver; $85 each for two; $70 each for three; or $60 each for four. Groups are limited to four certified divers. Each diver arranges their own equipment, two scuba tanks and air fills, and dive-site admission. Guided dives do not include certification training.
